Computer glitch double-books vaccine appointments at Gloucester County megasite

SOUTH JERSEY (KYW Newsradio) — New Jersey officials apologized for a computer glitch on Thursday that caused COVID-19 vaccine appointments at the Gloucester County megasite to be double-booked.

Gov. Phil Murphy said a problem with the NJ Vaccine Scheduling System caused confusion at the Rowan College site. The snafu canceled afternoon appointments and created openings that didn’t exist, which other people then snatched up.

“Unfortunately, we needed to cancel a number of appointments that were erroneously double-booked,” Murphy said Friday at a Trenton news conference.

He couldn’t say how many appointments were deleted, but he applauded the staff who vaccinated everyone who showed up. State Police Superintendent Col. Pat Callahan said the megasite staff administered the vaccine to 2,400 people on Thursday.

The bug appeared to be confined to the Gloucester County vaccine site.

“They did a heck of a job under the circumstances,” Murphy added.

Deputy Health Commissioner David Adinaro said the state will accommodate those who lost their appointments.

“We will work with those canceled on rescheduling their appointments at the nearest available time,” he said.

Murphy said the state is working to make sure the double-booking defect doesn’t happen again.

“We regret the confusion this technical issue caused and we are working with our vendor.”
