Woody Johnson takes shot at Zach Wilson with backup quarterback comment

Jets owner didn't hold back when assessing his team's disappointing 7-10 season during Thursday night's NFL Honors event.

Specifically, Johnson took a veiled shot at Zach Wilson, telling the media in attendance that the team clearly needs a backup quarterback next season, hinting that his former No. 2 overall pick didn't even qualify as one this year.

"We need a backup quarterback," Johnson said. "We didn't have one last year."

The comments seemed like a clear dig at Wilson, who struggled in place of Aaron Rodgers after Gang Green's big offseason addition went down with a season-ending Achilles injury just four snaps into his Jets tenure. Without Rodgers, the offense stalled, Wilson was eventually benched (again), and was reportedly reluctant to accept the starting role again after Tim Boyle and Trevor Siemian didn't cut it either.

Wilson will likely be traded this offseason, putting an end to a disastrous tenure after being helmed as the franchise quarterback of the future. Instead, his parting gift from the team owner was a shot at his performance in a season that was supposed to see Wilson learn and grow under the tutelage of Rodgers.
