The Rangers will honor one of their greatest players in franchise history on Friday night, retiring Henrik Lundqvist’s No. 30 at Madison Square Garden before the Blueshirts take on the Wild.
The legendary goalie will certainly be honored for his unforgettable moments as a Ranger, from his clutch performance in game seven of the conference semifinals against the Penguins in 2014, to his legendary Winter Classic showings. But one moment had nothing to do with career accomplishments, Vezina trophies or All-Star nods.
We’re talking about the time Lundqvist squirted Sidney Crosby in the face with water.
Lundqvist and the Rangers were hosting Crosby’s Penguins in the spring of 2014, when a scrum ensued in the New York end. Rangers defenseman Dan Girardi knocked Crosby down to the ice, and just as Crosby took his fall, Lundqvist casually skated over and covertly squirted a bunch of water into Crosby’s face.
Apparently, the league didn’t find the act to be comical by any means, and fined Lundqvist $5,000. But it is still remembered as one of the top moments of the goaltender’s career, especially for Rangers fans who have no love for Crosby.
