An emotional moment at Thursday's Minneapolis City Council meeting as members voted to rename part of Blaisdell Avenue in honor of late Officer Jamal Mitchell.
Mitchell was responding to a shooting call on May 30th, 2024 near Blaisdell and Franklin in south Minneapolis, when he stopped to help a person he believed was injured.
There, he was ambushed and fatally shot.
At Thursday's council meeting, Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara addressed Mitchell's fiancé and children.
"There is not a day that goes by that Jamal is forgotten," said O'Hara.
A civilian and the gunman, 35-year-old Mustafa Ahmed Mohamed, also died in the incident. Three others, including a firefighter were injured.
"And I hope that today because of the the action of the city council, it will provide some solace to you," O'Hara added. "This city, for years and years and years, for everyone who goes past that intersection, will know that the name Jamal Mitchell represents a hero."
Mitchell was sworn in by O'Hara and had only been on the job two years when he was killed.
"Everyone who goes past that intersection will know that the name Jamal Mitchell represents a hero," said Chief O'Hara
