Minneapolis Downtown Council CEO Adam Duininck says it includes plenty of fun intended to keep downtown workers in the area a bit longer Tuesdays through Thursdays. Those are the busiest in-office days downtown.

"It's not lost on us that leaving downtown some of those busy days can be difficult, traffic-wise and all that," said Duininck. "So if there are activities, whether it's live music, whether it's food trucks, Pilates in the park that the YMCA does with us, maybe those sorts of activities, if timed right, will be something to attract people to hang around and do those activities before they head home."

Duininck says they're also experimenting with closing down part of Nicollet Mall on the third Wednesday of each month, including rerouting buses for a one-block stretch between 9th and 10th streets.

He says while there's been talk for years about getting buses off the Mall entirely, it's all about baby steps right now.

"It would be hard to shut the whole street down," he acknowledged. "It just would be. But if we start to do it in a few blocks, and show that it works, then possibly on the next block or two it's an example of, 'OK, that worked on this block, what could fit here?' And so I think that the idea is to really be a demonstration."

A new event this year capitalizes on the FIFA World Cup soccer tournament in June, where fans will be able to catch the action on an outdoor jumbo screen at Peavey Plaza.

Daily happenings this summer include food trucks, fitness classes, live music and movies, and the return of the artist-designed Pianos on Parade. Larger, new events this year include WWE SummerSlam activities, and a Prince Celebration Block Party.

"Vibrant downtowns aren't just through a built through policies or through press releases," adds Minneapolis Parks and Recreation Board Superintendent Al Bangoura. "They're built through experiences, culture, recreation, and public life. They're built when people feel safe, when they feel welcomed, and they're excited to be there in the downtown area."

Here are some of the highlighted events of the summer (in chronological order). All are free and open to the public (outside of SummerSlam):
