Sleep Expert: Spring forward is bad for our health

“As a sleep physician, the dumbest thing our country does is spring forward.”

That’s Dr. Andrew Stiehm, a sleep expert with Allina Health. He says changing the clock has significant health ramifications.

“We've see increased heart attacks, increased car accidents, increased suicidality in that week,” Steihm told WCCO Radio’s Susie Jones on Sunday’s Health Show. “Abruptly losing an hour of sleep is very unhealthy as a society. And why we keep choosing to voluntarily do this every year is a fool’s errand.”

Steihm adds that the best thing you can do is to make it incremental.

“Consider moving things by 15 minutes as opposed to moving things by one hour,” Steihm said. “So, do things in smaller increments at a time, as opposed to one big leap. So hopefully you won't feel that jolt on the day after.”

We will spring forward again in just a couple of weeks, on March 12 at 2:00 a.m.
