Clay Matthews still seems to have something left in the tank.
The veteran pass-rusher finished 2019 with nine sacks in his only year with the Rams despite missing three games with a broken jaw. But, still, cost-cutting led Los Angeles to part ways with Matthews this offseason, making the 33-year-old a free agent.
According to ESPN.com, the availability of Matthews piqued the Patriots' interest.
Jeremy Fowler added this tidbit in a piece breaking down some of the more interesting approaches by teams in this year's draft: “There was some leaguewide buzz that the Patriots considered signing free agent Clay Matthews for pass-rushing help, but that was before they landed outside linebacker Josh Uche out of Michigan in the second round, No. 60 overall."
The selection of Uche by the Patriots in the second round appeared to fill the hole Matthews may have been previously targeted to help with.
The six-time Pro Bowler remains unsigned.
