No one knows who the Patriots quarterback come Week 1, even Cam Newton himself.
But when it comes to rookie Mac Jones, is starting against Miami a goal? He was asked about it following Monday's joint session with the Eagles.
“For me, honestly I have always been blessed just to be part of a team and you never know when your time is going to come, so I am ready to keep working," he said to reporters. "Obviously, I have a lot of work to do and that’s very clear, but I am going to keep working every day and everything will work out how it’s supposed to play out.”
It's hard to read into his answer, but it's clear it was to dodge the question. With that being said, based on his competitiveness the answer would be yes.
Jones also discussed how he blocks out the noise, both good and bad.
“I don’t really look at anything," he said. "That’s the best way to do it, honestly. Just take the feedback from my coaches and my parents or whoever that I trust and then kind of go from there. But I know most of the times when it was good and most of the times when it was bad, but at the end of the day you have to just stay even-keeled and keep working because it’s not going to be perfect every time.”
Jones and the Patriots will have another joint session Tuesday before Thursday's second preseason game.
