DETROIT (WWJ) -- Slick road conditions could be partially to blame for a pair of deadly crashes on metro Detroit freeways early Sunday morning.
Michigan State Police say around 2 a.m., they responded to a single vehicle crash in Detroit along the southbound lanes of M-10, the John C. Lodge Freeway near Glendale Avenue on the city's northwest side. A preliminary investigation revealed the driver of a passenger vehicle lost control and struck the median wall.
The driver was not wearing a seat belt and died in the crash, according to police.
State police are still trying to identify the victim and notify their family. Troopers are still investigating the crash.
Around 6:30 a.m., troppers were called to the scene of a crash along eastbound I-94 near 8 Mile Road in Harper Woods, where a driver was trapped inside of a burning vehicle.
Early investigations show that the driver, who also has not been identified yet, was traveling at a high rate of speed and lost control. The vehicle went up the embankment and struck a tree, catching fire.
Both crashes are under investigation.
The crashes happened after a round of heavy rain and wind swept through metro Detroit, flooding some roadways and knocking out power for thousands of DTE customers.
