911 Lines Working Again After Statewide Outage

(WWJ) - Michigan State Police say 911 service has been restored following an hours-long statewide outage.

The lines went down around 2:45 a.m. Friday during an update at call centers that use mostly fiber optic lines to connect you in event of an emergency, according to Michigan State Police First Lieutenant Mike Shaw.

"They were doing an update on the fiber optic lines to different 911 centers across the state. They had a technical issue that didn't work when they were updating it," said Shaw.

Most of the metro Detroit area wasn't affected, Shaw said, because those call centers use copper lines. But residents in counties outside the area experienced issues.

At 7 a.m., State Police said the outage was fixed statewide and all 911 lines are up and working again.
