HARTFORD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WWJ) -- A Detroit man is in custody and a woman is injured after a two-county high-speed police chase ended in crash in West Michigan over the weekend.
Van Buren County Central dispatch was alerted that Berrien County police were chasing a suspect along I-94 early Saturday morning and the chase was about to cross into Van Buren County, according to a report from Fox 17 in Grand Rapids.
Authorities said the driver of a 2019 gray Chrysler 300 was headed east on the freeway at speeds well over the limit and had eluded Baroda-Lake police before Berrien County police had quickly located them and engaged in a pursuit.
Eventually, the car entered Van Buren County on County Road 362 and turned north onto County Road 687, near Hartford Township. That's when the Detroit man lost control of the Chrysler because of icy road conditions and crashed into a utility pole, severely damaging the vehicle.
A 22-year-old woman, also from Detroit, had to be airlifted to a nearby hospital. She was listed in critical condition.
The driver was treated for his injuries at Lakeland Hospital in nearby St. Joseph before being released into police custody.
The driver had two outstanding felony and misdemeanor warrants, but it was not clear why they had been issued, and authorities did not disclose what led to the initial chase. Officials in Wayne County placed a hold on the driver for an outstanding warrant, according to Fox 17.
