(WWJ) Michigan State Police shut down a stretch of I-96 Tuesday evening to investigate a shooting on the freeway.
At around 6 p.m., MSP troopers were dispatched to the eastbound I-96 Local exit ramp to Greenfield in Detroit on a report of shots fired.
When troopers arrived they located the victim's vehicle on the right shoulder of the ramp. There were several bullet holes in the vehicle and shell casings were found in the area, according to MSP.
It was discovered that the wounded victim was transported to the hospital in another vehicle. His or her condition is unknown at this time.
The suspect vehicle exited the freeway according to a witness, police said.
No description has been released and other details, including what prompted the shooting, are unclear.
Metro South troopers remained on the freeway into the evening, as the investigation continues.
All eastbound local lanes were still closed at M-39 as of 8:30 p.m.
There have been more than half-a-dozen freeway shootings in metro Detroit over the past month or so, following a string of more than a dozen over the summer. Police said many of them were linked to road rage incidents, and none of them are believed to have been related.
Anyone with information about this shooting is asked to call State Police 313-237-2450 or leave a tip on the MSP mobile app.
