MACOMB TWP. (WWJ) -- One person is dead after a head-on crash involving an alleged drunk driver in Macomb Township.

The Macomb County Sheriff's Office said deputies responded to the scene at around 10:20 p.m. Saturday, at the intersection of North Avenue and Rochelle Drive.

Investigators found that a 36-year-old man driving a Chevy Impala had been drifting from the southbound lane into the northbound lane on North Ave., causing northbound drivers to swerve to avoid a crash. He then veered over the center line, crashing head-on into a Acura TL, officials said.

There were three people inside the Acura, including a backseat passenger who died at the hospital. The two other people in the car were also injured, but were expected to be OK, according to the sheriff's office.

Deputies said they smelled alcohol on the suspect, who was taken to a hospital for treatment of critical injuries.

He is charged with operating while intoxicated causing serious injury, and operating while intoxicated causing death.

An interim bond was set at $500,000, cash/surety, no 10%, while the suspect remains hospitalized.

No names were immediately released.
