SOUTHFIELD (WWJ) -- Two people were killed in a crash involving a wrong-way driver on the Lodge Freeway over the weekend.
Michigan State Police said troopers were called out just after 5 p.m. Sunday to the northbound Lodge (M-10) at Evergreen Rd. for a serious crash. Just moments before, police said dispatch received 911 calls about a wrong-way driver in the same area.
In an update Monday, MSP officials said the investigation has revealed that a 79-year-old man from Huntington Woods was driving the wrong way on the Lodge when he crashed a Lincoln MKZ into a GMC Terrain driven by a 74-year-old man from Dearborn.
The wrong-way driver died at the scene, police said, and the second driver was rushed to a hospital where he later died of his injuries. Both men were wearing their seatbelts and both families have been notified.
No other vehicles were involved.
The Lodge was closed for several hours Sunday night for an investigation and clean up.
In a statement, MSP First Lt. Mike Shaw said police don't know yet where the wrong way driver entered the freeway, or if that driver was impaired.
Autopsies were performed Monday, pending toxicology reports. Officials have not released the name of either man.
Troopers are continuing to investigate this crash and are asking anyone who may have witnessed it or has any information about the crash to contact MSP at 248.584.5740.
