ROMULUS (WWJ) -- Travelers heading to Detroit Metro Airport in Romulus may notice some big, new security barriers in place.
A number of 4 1/2-ton cement barriers have been placed in front of the doors on the departures and arrivals levels at the McNamara Terminal.
Plans for a permanent barrier are being discussed by the Wayne County Airport Authority and airlines.
The change was made after, on Jan 23, a man drove a car into the terminal last month. Six people were treated for injuries.
In a statement provided to WWJ Newsradio 950 on Wednesday, WCAA CEO Chad Newton said what happened that day was certainly unprecedented, and led them to rethink the airport's security features.
"The building features design elements intended to prevent a crash, but they turned out to be inadequate to stop the car. As a result of what happened, you will see 9,000-pound cement barriers are in place," Newton said.
He added, "We’re continuing to work with the airlines and our internal teams to determine what is the most appropriate permanent barrier to prevent a vehicle from driving into the doors again. Our first priority is to protect our visitors and employees from any such incident in the future. Rest assured, the airport is more secure now than it was last week."
As for the crash itself, airport officials said driver involved is still undergoing a medical evaluation and police are continuing to investigate. It's not yet clear if he'll face charges.
