LANSING (WWJ) - One newborn baby just couldn't wait to enter the world last month and had to be delivered in the parking garage of a Lansing-area hospital, officials said.

A team of highly skilled Emergency Department caregivers at E.W. Sparrow Hospital are being credited with helping an expecting mother safely deliver her infant girl on Monday, Oct. 30, after it became apparent the baby wouldn't wait to get through the hospital doors.

“Our team got word that there was a someone delivering in the parking lot and raced outside,” said Katheryn Moody, M.D. “We worked together and helped deliver a healthy baby girl while the first snow of fall was falling. Mom and baby did great and we are honored to be a part of their story.”

Moody said she was helped by Resident Nathaniel Gerdes, D.O., registered nurse Jessica Carpenter and Sparrow EMT Amanda Wonsey while Desiree Albano, D.O., an OB-GYN resident, assisted in the baby's care after she was delivered in the family’s Suburban.

The baby entered the world at 5 pounds, 6 ounces, the hospital said.

“It’s a Monday I will never forget,” said Wonsey. “I have worked in the hospital setting for a total of 26 years and this was my first parking lot delivery. I am really glad that baby and mom are doing well."

Officials said the newborn spent several days at Sparrow’s Regional Intensive Care Unit (RNICU) before going home. Her mom was also treated before being discharged. The hospital said both mom and baby are doing well.

"Sparrow Hospital recently achieved a “platinum” designation from the Michigan Alliance for Innovation on Maternal Health (MI AIM), the highest ranking possible for its care of pregnant and new moms, highlighting our efforts to ensure expecting mothers and our youngest patients receive the highest quality care in Mid-Michigan," the Sparrow Health System added.
