Mt. Pleasant, MICH. (WWJ) While showing off his true Chippewa pride, a star Central Michigan University quarterback left the hospital nearly a month after a shooting left him in critical condition and on a ventilator.
The Isabella County Sheriff’s Office said a suspect opened fire during a fight at a party at Deerfield Apartment Complex across the street from Central Michigan University on April 24. The gunfire struck John Keller, 20, and another student, 23.
Keller was shot in the chest and placed on a ventilator at Hurley Medical Center in Flint, after he was life-flighted from another hospital near the university. Doctors removed the ventilator early this month.
On May 14, his father Ray tweeted: “Update on John: Still in the ICU. Needs to continue to heal but he is doing much better and improving daily.”
However, just a little over a week later, he is well enough to go home and continue his recovery surrounded by his family.
The Isabella County Sheriff’s Office and Michigan State Police arrested Kenneth Thomas, 21, of Farmington Hills for the shooting. They said he and a group of his friends were visiting bars and restaurants in the area, and when the venues shut down, they went to the gathering at Deerfield Apartments.
During that time, the group from Detroit and other guests at the party got into an altercation. During the fight; Thomas left to get a gun out of his car, came back to the party and started firing “without regard for human life,” according to the Sheriff’s Office.
Thomas did not have any ties to Central Michigan University, according to the Sheriff. He faces 10 charges in connection to the shooting. He has pleaded not guilty and faces a preliminary hearing in July. He is being held on a $1 million bond.
The other student who was shot, Tyler Bunting, 23, is in stable condition. He has since been released from the hospital.
A GoFundMe Page for John and his family has raised more than $30,000 for medical expenses. His story made national news and even caught the attention of TMZ, USA Today and ESPN.
“God is Great!” Ray exclaimed on Twitter announcing John’s discharge from the hospital. He also gave a shoutout to the Hurley Medical Center trauma team and his son’s fellow Chippewas for their support.
