DETROIT (WWJ) -- A Detroit man and a Detroit woman are facing charges for the fatal shooting of a security guard working in the city's Greektown entertainment district last weekend.
Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy on Tuesday announced the case against 33-year-old Travis Deshawn Irving — who allegedly pulled the trigger, and his girlfriend, 34-year-old Nicole Kay Christian — who allegedly helped him to escape.
The shooting happened just after 8 p.m. on Saturday, April 15, at a liquor store in the 570 block of Monroe Street, near the Hollywood Casino at Greektown.
According to Detroit Police, there was an argument inside the store involving someone who had cut in line.
After the cutter apologized, Straughter was reportedly outside the store speaking with others about the situation when the suspect took a small caliber weapon out of his pocket and shot Straughter in the chest, unprovoked.
Irving then fled the scene, "aided by" Christian, prosecutors said.
Straughter was rushed to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.
An investigation by the Detroit Police Department led to the arrests of both Irving and Christian later that day.
Irving has been charged with one count of First-Degree Murder, one count of Felony in Possession of a Firearm, and two counts of Felony Firearm. He faces mandatory life in prison with parole if convicted on the murder charges.
Christian has been charged with one count of Accessory After the Fact, and faces up to five years in prison.
The couple was arraigned Tuesday afternoon before Magistrate Dawn White in 36th District Court.
This shooting was just one of five in Greektown over what was characterized as an exceptionally violent weekend in the city.
Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan said it happened as “hundreds of people” were out enjoying themselves with their families in the downtown area. Duggan noted he spent most of the day Saturday in the Greektown area and described the mood as "mostly joyful."
The mayor described was Straughter as a "beloved, longtime member of the Greektown" and he was known for his "kindness and gentleness."
Booking photos for the defendants in this case were not immediately available.
