DETROIT (WWJ) - Police have allowed people to return to a downtown Detroit courthouse hour after a bomb threat sparked a full-scale evacuation on Thursday morning.

Detroit Police Department's Cpl. Dan Donakowski told WWJ around 9:20 a.m. that people are clearing out of the 36th District Court on 420 block of Madison Street in Detroit, a stone's throw from Comerica Park and Ford Field.

Donakowski said at this time, they are unsure where or who made the threat, only that it was made over the phone.

There was a large police presence in the District Detroit area as police searched the building. WWJ's Mike Campbell reported from the scene where troopers with the Michigan State Police had blocked off Lafayette near I-75.

"We will have our explosive canine units on scene assisting. Please stay clear of the area as traffic is congested in the area," MSP said in an earlier update to X.

Campbell said a team of bomb-sniffing dogs from MSP, Wayne State University Police and Detroit police were present and helped conduct the search for possible explosives.

"They do have a bomb squad truck out here...right now it's a waiting game to see if the dogs find anything," Campbell added. "Nobody has said anything officially yet, other than... somehow they determined [the threat] was credible enough that they evacuated the building."

Campbell reported tht this isn't the first bomb threat the 36th District County has received. At the start of summer, a threat came into the courthouse that also prompted an evacuation.

"They generally do evacuate the building.T hey take it seriously enough," Campbell said. "So we have to wait and see if this one's real or not. In the meantime, the dogs are doing their job and we'll let you know as soon as we know."

Police are expected to provide an update at a later time as authorities continue to investigate the threat to the building.
