DEARBORN (WWJ) -- Owners of the Village Plaza in Dearborn have been served a demolition notice for the property.

The vacant 12-story building is located on Michigan Ave near Outer Drive.

According to a post on Dearborn Mayor Abdullah Hammoud's Facebook page, "The City of Dearborn has determined that the Village Plaza... is a dangerous building as defined by the Housing Law of Michigan."

Hammoud said the demolition notice comes "after several failed attempts to rehabilitate the property and address the notices of violation."

"This blighted property has negatively impacted the surrounding neighborhoods and our downtown for too many years," said the mayor.

The official demolition notice served to Namou Hotel Group. The notice declares the property a "dangerous building" and provides instructions for agreeing to voluntary demolition or appealing the demolition.

The building's owners have 10 days to accept or appeal the demolition notice. In the meantime, the property must remain vacant.

Mayor Hammoud has promised to provide updates on the situation.

As reported by the Detroit Free Press, Village Plaza was evacuated for safety and maintenance issues in February 2018. It was then purchased by Dearborn Hotel Group, LLC for $4.18 million.
