Family of metro Detroit journalist jailed in Myanmar 'exhausted from worry'

(WWJ) The brother of a Huntington Woods native jailed in Myanmar says the family is “exhausted from worry.”

It has been nearly two months since Danny Fenster -- who had been living in the southeast Asian country and working as an editor for the publication Frontier Myanmar -- was detained. He was arrested at Yangon International Airport on May 24 when he was trying to travel home to the metro Detroit area to visit family.

The Myanmar government has charged him with incitement. The government is controlled by the military following a coup in February and has reportedly been attempting to sensor independent media outlets that have been critical.

Fenster has told his attorney he believes he has COVID-19, but is receiving no treatment, though officials in Myanmar have denied he is infected.

While the brothers have been able to speak over the phone in recent weeks, Bryan Fenster says he doesn’t expect he’ll be able to talk to his brother this week to find out how he is doing.

“I keep telling people it’s like we’re walking in a desert, its 110 degrees out, there’s no one around, concrete, the heat’s piling up, and there’s vultures just -- sorry to be graphic, but -- taking chunks out of us. Every day gets harder and harder,” Bryan Fenster said on CNN.

Press freedom associations and U.S. government officials have been attempting to negotiate Fenster’s release.
