FERNDALE (WWJ) -- A Ferndale man faces multiple felony assault charges following an incident in which he threatened sheriff's deputies with knives during a mental health crisis and was shot by police, "accidentally cutting" an officer in the aftermath.

In a Friday news release, the Ferndale Police Department reported that the man -- identified as Andrew Harvey, 25, of Ferndale -- had been arraigned on four felony charges in connection with Tuesday's altercation.

Harvey now stands accused of two counts of resisting arrest causing injury and one count each of assault with a dangerous weapon and assault with intent to do great bodily harm.

On Apr. 4, Wayne County Sheriff's deputies responded to Harvey's home after they were alerted that the Ferndale man had tried to remove an electronic tether. Why Harvey was wearing the tether has not been disclosed.

According to WCSO spokesman Ed Foxworth, when officers arrived at the residence, they spoke with Harvey through a window and determined that he was in the middle of a mental health crisis and wanted to die.

As they communicated with the defendant, two other deputies entered Harvey's through a back door.

Harvey allegedly threatened to stab them with two knives, and the cops tased him. After the Taser failed to stop Harvey's advance, law enforcement shot him twice in the leg and once in the stomach.

Afterward, deputies approached Harvey to offer help, and one of the officers was cut by a knife the defendant was still holding.

Though Ferndale PD reported that Harvey stabbed the officer before he was shot, Foxworth told WWJ that the defendant cut the deputy by accident in the aftermath of the shooting while first-aid was being rendered.

Foxworth also said that the injured cop was alright and would recover without issue.

According to Ferndale PD, Harvey was in critical but stable condition after the encounter. He was taken into custody and transported to a local hospital where he is expected to recover.

Additionally, the Oakland County Sheriff's Office Special Investigations Unit is evaluating the officer-involved shooting.

The judge set Harvey's bond at $250,000, and his next court appearance is scheduled for Apr. 17.

If the case goes to trial and Harvey is convicted, he could spend up to 10 years in prison.
