HOWELL (WWJ) - Police investigating two separate shootings that killed a 20-year-old man and a 2-year-old child in Livingston County exactly two months apart say they are still working on the cases -- and have asked for the public to be patient.
On Tuesday afternoon, the Howell Police Department put out a prepared statement on two fatal shootings saying that both investigations were pending additional information.
In the first incident that occurred on June 11, the 2-year-old son of a Dearborn police officer accidentally shot himself after finding an unsecured gun in their Howell home located in the 1900 block of Oak Squire Lane.
Investigators said they are still awaiting a final forensic report from the Michigan State Police Crime Lab as well as an autopsy report.
A nearby neighbor, told WWJ's Jon Hewett he was home at the time of the shooting around 6 p.m.
"Safety's always number one. And you don't allow children near (guns)," he said.
Police said once all the information is received, the case will be presented to the Livingston County Prosecutor's Office for review.
In the second incident two months later on August 11, police discovered the body of a 20-year-old man shot dead just after midnight at a home on the 400 block of West Street, a few blocks from the downtown area.
The victim was identified as Oghenevwede (Wede) Okagbare, 20.
Police confirmed they had a suspect in custody on an unrelated charge and are continuing to investigate "into the tragic and senseless shooting."
"Since the incident, detectives have executed several search warrants and are continuing to process information as it comes in," the department said. "We ask that the public be patient as we process that information for presentation to the Livingston County Prosecutors Office for review."
No information about the suspect or a motive has been released.
