TRAVERSE CITY (WWJ) --- An investigation is underway in Traverse City where construction workers unearthed human bones while doing some roadwork.

According to the Traverse City Police Department, the "significant discovery" was made in the area of Grandview Parkway and Oak Street on Friday, July 26, as a crew was working at that intersection.

Police said, however, that an initial investigation has found that the bones are not from a recent crime. In fact, police said in a release that the remains "appear to be from a pre-modern era, suggesting they could be from a time period well before contemporary forensic methods were available."

The police department will now collaborate with Michigan State Police, archaeologists, and forensic anthropologists to conduct a thorough investigation to learn more about the bones.

Police said work at the construction site has resumed after it was temporarily halted to allow investigators to do their work.

No further details about what was found were immediately released.
