(WWJ) – Tuesday marked a major anniversary in the history of space exploration – the first time a human ever entered space.
On April 12, 1961, Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin launched into orbit aboard the spacecraft Vostok 1. It was a marquee moment that virtually kicked off the American-Russian “space race,” which had gotten underway several years earlier with the launch of the Soviet satellite Sputnik 1.
But that milestone went largely uncelebrated this year, in the midst of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Mike Murray of the Delta College Planetarium in Bay City joined WWJ’s Erin Vee on this edition of "All Over the Space" to talk about the anniversary and what it meant for space exploration.
Murray also dove into the mystery of Area 51 in Nevada and whether it actually houses UFOs.
