ARMADA (WWJ) - The couple who owns a large dog that allegedly attacked a smaller dog in Macomb County last month have come forward, police say.
Authorities in Armada police have spent nearly two weeks searching for the owners who rushed off from Kozy Korner Saloon on Oct. 22 after one of their large dogs bit a French Bichon named "Olaf."
Police were told by the pair on Wednesday night that they were out walking the English Mastiffs while on a first date when the attack occurred. They came forward after they saw multiple news reports about the incident and said they were unaware they were wanted for questioning or that the small dog had died.
Susan Kahanak, Olaf's owner, had previously told WDIV that she and her dog were walking past the restaurant when two English Mastiffs suddenly jumped up.
“They toppled the table, and the dogs they attacked my dog,” Kahanak said.
According to Armada police Chief Richard Maierle, the couple and their English Mastiffs quickly left the scene in a blue sedan after the incident while Kahanak rushed Olaf to the vet for emergency care.
He later died after the bite wound became infected.
Police say the two large dogs involved in the incident will be checked to see if they are properly licensed and vaccinated.
The prosecutor's office will then review the case to determine if criminal charges will be brought forward.
