ALPENA (WWJ) -- A Lansing-area man has died after trying to rescue a dog from a river in Northern Michigan.
The Alpena Police Department received a call just before 1 p.m. on Sunday that the 36-year-old man had disappeared under the surface of the Thunder Bay River.
According to witnesses, the 36-year-old man from Lainsburg -- located east of Lansing -- slipped on wet rocks while attempting to help his fiancé save her dog.
His body was recovered around 2:30 p.m. by emergency responders in about 20 feet of water around 20 feet offshore in an area north of the 2nd Avenue bridge.
The man's fiancé and her dog both made it out of the water with no injuries.
Police have stated the incident was an accidental drowning, and have not released the man's name.
