It was a dramatic scene in sleepy Missaukee County in northern Michigan when a barricaded gunman exchanged fire with police after releasing a detailed letter threatening healthcare workers over what he believed was incompetent care during a recent hospital visit.
The man was under investigation for threats made against healthcare workers, said the Michigan State Police, after the Cadillac Post received a 32-page letter from him detailing his dissatisfaction with his medical care. The man's Nov. 29 email listed demands that, he said, if not met by midnight on Dec. 5, would force him to "seek out the healthcare workers and their families to kill them," according to a press release from Michigan State Police.
The Missaukee County Prosecutor's Office authorized a felony arrest warrant, and officers arrived there at about 7 a.m. Sunday. The man refused to surrender and opened fire several times as officers approached, police said. Eventually, officers brought an armored vehicle to the scene, and it was also damaged by gunfire.
After a standoff that lasted all day, the 41-year-old shooter died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was discovered dead inside his apartment at 5:10 p.m. Sunday, 10 hours after police arrived.
