(WWJ) An off-duty Detroit police officer shot a suspect in Dearborn Heights, police said.
Michigan State Police (MSP) told WWJ the officer was inside a 7-Eleven on Cherry Hill near Inkster when an armed suspect entered and attempted to rob the store around 4 p.m. Friday.
"Words were exchanged between the suspect and the male police officer, and shots were exchanged," State Police said in a tweet.
The officer was not hit by gunfire; however, the suspect was. His condition was upgraded from critical to serious but stable after he got out of surgery.
State Police said an investigation is in the "preliminary stages." It is unknown, at this point, if the officer will face charges.
