DETROIT (WWJ) -- Detroit Police Commissioner Bryan Ferguson has now resigned after an alleged incident involving a prostitute.

The Wayne County Sheriff's Office issued a citation for “indecent obscene conduct" after Ferguson was found in his vehicle with a sex worker Wednesday night.

Ferguson was reportedly in the area of Schaefer and Schoolcraft around 7 a.m. Wednesday when an undercover deputy with the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office caught him “engaging in a sex act in his truck,” according to a report from WXYZ.

Ferguson has refuted the reported series of events, saying it was all just a misunderstanding. According to reports, Ferguson said woman was actually fleeing from a man and was screaming, saying the man was trying to kill her. She then jumped into his truck without permission.

WXYZ reported Ferguson, during a Wednesday phone call, “adamantly denied" that anything sexual happened between himself and the woman, and said he demanded she leave his vehicle, and even tried to push her out.

The woman involved in the incident was also cited.

In a statement released Thursday, Ferguson said it has been an honor and a privilege to serve on the board, adding: "After further consideration of the best interests of my family and the Board, I am choosing to resign as District 1 Police Commissioner effective immediately. Again, I admonish the Board and the public to remain focused on the important work of oversight, transparency and accountability."

The Detroit Police Department said Wednesday they are aware of the situation.
