SOUTHFIELD (WWJ) -- A 23-year-old man accused of fatally shooting his grandmother is facing murder charges.

Southfield police charged Desjuan Tyree-Anthony Mack with felony murder and felony firearm on Tuesday in connection with the death of his 72-year-old grandma, Margaret Mack.

WWJ's Ryan Marshall was at the meeting where Southfield Police Chief Elvin Barren and members of the family met with media to announce the charges and more details in the case.

The family said they're stunned and confused because they have no idea why Desjuan would take his own grandmother's life.

Desjuan reportedly lived with his grandmother and they had a great relationship, according to family.

"Margaret Mack was a god-fearing woman," said Margaret's daughter-in-law, Courtney Mack. "She had four sons that she loved dearly -- she spoke to her sons everyday. She was a loving grandmother."

Late Thursday night, on March 24, officers were called to the Legacy Place Apartments in Southfield after Desjuan called to report his grandmother was unresponsive and cold to the touch.

He told police that he had last seen his grandmother one hour prior to calling police but he fell asleep and when he awoke he discovered her in this position.

Barren said when authorities arrived on scene they found her in a back bedroom with gunshot wounds in the back.

Police originally classified this as a medical run because of the information provided in the 911 call, but when they arrived they discovered that what the suspect told them was conflicting -- so he was arrested.

According to officials, the gun used was stolen from somewhere in Farmington Hills back in 2018.

Desjuan was arraigned Monday on the two charges and was not given any bond. He's currently in police custody and awaiting his upcoming court date on Thursday, Apr. 7
