SOUTHFIELD (WWJ) -- An Oakland County man will spend decades in prison for the murder of his younger sister.

In April, 24-year-old Gyasi Stribling of Southfield was found guilty of first-degree murder after he shot and killed his 8-year-old sister, Bailei Singleton, in January of 2021.

According to prosecutors, Stribling — who was 20-year-old at the time — shot his little sister because she was "talking back" to him in the living room of their home at the 12 North Apartments at 12 Mile and Telegraph Rd.

The child was taken to a local hospital where she died of her injuries.

On Tuesday, Stribling was sentenced in Oakland County Circuit Court to 20 to 60 years in prison.

“Bailei Singleton should still be here with us today,” said Prosecutor Karen McDonald, in a news release at the time of his conviction. “Her murder was a tragedy for her family. It’s unconscionable that anyone, let alone an 8 year old child, could be murdered by a relative and in their own home over the slightest of disagreements. This case is, unfortunately, a reminder of how gun violence is a public health epidemic that can end a life in an instant.”
