Detroit police fire shots at suspect in road rage shooting who fled traffic stop; other suspect at large

DETROIT (WWJ) – A suspect is hospitalized after a shooting involving Detroit police officers Monday afternoon.

The shooting stems from an attempted traffic stop after officers spotted people shooting at each other in an apparent road rage incident along 7 Mile Road, between Mt. Elliott and Van Dyke on the city's northeast side.

Officers with the 11th Precinct saw the gunfire and tried to initiate a traffic stop, Chief James White said during a press conference Monday.

While a brown GMC Yukon with no license plate fled the scene, officers tried to pull over a white Ford Expedition, which also fled. As officers followed on eastbound 7 Mile, the SUV entered the intersection at Sherwood and hit another vehicle and came to a stop.

As officers got out and approached the wreck, White said the driver began shooting at officers, who then took cover and returned fire.

The suspect was hit by at least one bullet, but White said authorities are investigating to determine whether they were hit by the officers' gunfire or in the exchange with the other vehicle.

The suspect is listed in temporary serious condition. White noted the injured suspect had a warrant for his arrest out of Kansas City, related to fentanyl trafficking.

White said investigators are working to gather more information on the other suspect's vehicle and expected to release more information soon.
