EASTPOINTE (WWJ) — A 14-year-old girl and a 17-year-old boy are behind bars in connection with an alleged plot to kill the girl’s mom.
The Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office announced Thursday the teens were arraigned last week on multiple charges, including conspiracy to commit first-degree premeditated murder.
On Wednesday, July 24, according to the prosecutor’s office, the 17-year-old boy went into the victim’s home in Eastpointe and strangled her.
The teen was eventually confronted and fled the home, according to the prosecutor’s office, but officials did not say who confronted him.
The mother is expected to survive.
Investigators with the Eastpointe Police Department eventually determined the victim’s 14-year-old daughter planned the attempted murder with the 17-year-old.
The prosecutor’s office did not release any information about a possible motive.
The girl has been charged with solicitation of murder — a life felony — and conspiracy to commit first-degree premeditated murder, a life felony without parole.
The boy, meanwhile, has been charged with conspiracy to commit first-degree premeditated murder and assault with intent to murder, also a life felony.
Prosecutor Pete Lucido said his office is seeking to charge both as adults.
The girl was arraigned on Aug. 14 and ordered to be held on a $1 million bond. The boy was arraigned two days earlier and his bond was set at $2.5 million. Both were remanded to the Juvenile Justice Center.
If either is released, they will be ordered to wear a steel GPS tether, restricted to home confinement, have no contact with the victim, witnesses, or co-defendant, and have no access to the internet.
Both teens are due back in court on Aug. 27.
“The alleged actions of these juveniles are not just illegal but also incredibly dangerous. This level of criminal activity is unacceptable, and we intend to treat it with the severity it deserves. That's why we are seeking to charge these juveniles as adults—because when you commit adult crimes, you face adult consequences,” Lucido said, per a press release.
Authorities have not released any information about a possible motive in the alleged murder scheme. Officials did not say whether the teens were dating.
