WARREN (WWJ) -- Warren Police are searching for a man who allegedly knocked another man unconscious during a Cub Scouts meeting in an elementary school cafeteria.

Police have identified the suspect in the reported assault at Roose Elementary School as Tyrone Sledge of Warren, and officials are urging him to turn himself in.

According to investigators, just after 7 p.m. on Tuesday, the victim -- a 47-year-old Center Line man -- arrived at the school to attend the meeting.

While in the parking lot, the victim saw that another Cub Scouts parent was parked in a handicap parking space without a permit. He and the woman then got into what police described a "minor verbal argument."

The victim continued into the school for meeting, while police said the woman called Sledge, a relative of hers, and told him what had happened.

Police said Sledge then came to the school, walked into the cafeteria, and approached the victim as the Cub Scout meeting was in progress.

According to the police report, it is alleged that Sledge told the victim he was armed and threatened the victim before punching him in the head and knocking him unconscious.

Sledge then fled the scene.

Warren Police and EMS were called, and the victim was taken to a hospital where he was listed in critical condition,

On Wednesday, the Macomb County Prosecutor's Office charged Sledge with Assault with Intent to do Great Bodily Harm, a 10-year felony, but he remained at large on Friday.

Police noted that Sledge has ties to the 10 Mile Rd. and Hoover area of Warren, and that has no previous violent crime convictions.

"This case is a sad example of a minor argument over a handicap parking space resulting in serious injuries to a victim," said Police Commissioner Bill Dwyer, in a statement.

He continued: "All too often we hear stories of relatively minor incidents resulting in shootings, serious assaults, or other unnecessary acts of violence. Thankfully, the victim's condition has improved as he is now conscious and stable. The fact that this suspect barged into a Cub Scout meeting and assaulted the victim at an event designed for children and families shows the brazenness of this incident. Due to the quick response of patrol officers and the relentless follow up of our investigators, we were able to identify the suspect and obtain a felony charge against him in less than 24 hours after the incident. Violent crimes such as this are not tolerated by the Warren Police Department."

As the search for the suspect continues, anyone with information about Sledge's whereabouts should contact the Warren Police Department at 586-574-4700.
