HURON TOWNSHIP (WWJ) An Allen Park man is in custody following an investigation into a reported overnight home invasion and sexual assault in Huron Township.
“We want to make it clear that this was not a random crime," Huron Township Director of Public Safety Everette Robbins said in a social media statement posted late Sunday afternoon. "There was never a danger to the community."
Huron Township Police said the woman told police the suspect sexually assaulted her after he broke into her home in the middle of the night--on Saturday, November 30th, around 3 a.m. She reported the crime to police about 12 hours later. Officers responded to her home in a suburb on Violet Street (36000 block), near I-275 and Sibley, to investigate.
The woman initially told investigators the suspect was a stranger. However, further investigation revealed she knew the suspect. He did not make forcible entry into her home prior to sexually assaulting her, police said.
Huron Township Police arrested the man, 50, at his home in Allen Park. He remains in custody pending charges from the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office. No information was released about his relationship to the victim.
The Michigan State Police Crime Laboratory assisted at the scene.
Huron Township Police released the following statement: “We want to make it clear that this was not a random crime. There was never a danger to the community. I apologize for causing a scare overnight for our residents, but we would always rather overreact than under react when it comes to the safety of our community. For various reasons there was a significant delay in reporting, so we had to work with the information that was available to us. As always, we appreciate the support and trust that our community has in us. This was a total team effort. Many of our officers responded during their off time from their homes to assist and worked overnight and into this afternoon without question. We all understood the assignment, the importance of the situation, and realize the affect something like this can have on the feeling of safety and security for a community. We are also incredibly thankful for the support and communication we received from the Township Supervisor and the Board of Trustees. Again, a total team effort.” -Everette Robbins, Director of Public Safety
