WESTLAND (WWJ) - A high school student is hospitalized and a suspect is in custody after hit-and-run crash Thursday morning in Westland.

In a letter to staff and students, Wayne-Westland Community schools Superintendent John Dignan said a student from John Glenn High School was the victim of a hit-and-run cash reported around 6:45 a.m.

The student was crossing Newburgh road near Marquette when a dark-colored compact SUV-style vehicle passed through the red light and hit them, according to police. The driver of the vehicle left the scene, continuing southbound on Newburgh road.

Police officials said Thursday afternoon the suspect has been arrested, but the investigation is still ongoing. Authorities have not released any details about the suspect, including their name and age.

Officials have not identified the student who was hit. The student is currently at St. Mary's Hospital in Livonia with serious injuries.

"Our thoughts and well wishes are with the student and their family at this time. It is important that we all respect the family’s privacy during this difficult time," a statement from the school said.

"Our district crisis response team will be at John Glenn High School throughout the day if any students need emotional support or someone to talk to about the morning events," Dignan added. "We will continue to work with the police department as necessary and help to support the injured student's family as needed."

The superintendent encouraged anyone with information about the crash or who may be able to identify the driver to contact the Westland Police Department at (734) 721-6311.
