ST. JOSEPH, Mich. (WWJ) – A woman is facing arson and child endangerment charges after allegedly setting fire to a building in a small West Michigan town on Monday.
Police officials say the fire broke out near Main and Broad Streets in downtown St. Joseph around 2 p.m., according to a report from Fox 17 in Grand Rapids.
The building, which reportedly has businesses on the first floor and apartment units on the second floor, suffered major damage.
Officers discovered the fire in one of the apartments upstairs, according to the report. It was not immediately clear whether anyone was injured in the blaze.
After the fire was put out by crews from St. Joe, Benton Harbor and Lincoln Township, investigators were eventually led to a 47-year-old woman.
Authorities say she was arrested on charges of first-degree arson and child endangerment. Officials did not say what led to the child endangerment charges.
A possible motive in the case was not immediately clear.
The suspect, whose name was not released, was expected to be arraigned Tuesday.
