Trump claims cheating in Wisconsin election case

Former President Donald Trump is responding to the Wisconsin State Supreme Court hearing oral arguments in a case that would upend the state's election maps.

Wisconsin's state legislative district maps have been described as "the poster child" of gerrymandering. The maps were first drawn in 2011 under former Republican Governor Scott Walker and have since helped the GOP keep its large majority in both chambers of the state legislature, even as Democrats often win statewide elections.

"Since Wisconsinites are not evenly distributed across the state by political affiliation, GOP mapmakers are able to pack Democratic voters into deeply lopsided districts in Madison and Milwaukee. The result is a map where a few Democrats win their seats with 90 percent of the vote and many Republicans win by around 60 percent of the vote," per The New Republic.

Last week, the Wisconsin Supreme Court began hearing arguments in a lawsuit challenging the Republican-drawn maps. The suit, filed by Democratic voters, seeks a court declaration that the maps are unconstitutional with an order to redraw the district boundaries by fall 2024.

In a new post on Truth Social, Trump condemned the Wisconsin Supreme Court for taking up the case.

"Tremendous cheating going on in a State that I love, Wisconsin," he wrote. "Republicans must do something to stop it!"

Trump won Wisconsin in the 2016 presidential election with 47.9% of the vote, beating Hillary Clinton who had 46.9%. He lost the state in the 2020 election, falling to President Joe Biden 48.8% to 49.4%
