Coronavirus will be a topic at today's New Orleans City Council meeting. City health director Dr. Jennifer Avegno has been asked to come update the council.
Council president Helena Moreno requested the update, and councilman Jared Brossett says information is always a good thing.
"We wanted to make sure that all of our citizens are protected," said Brossett. "I'm looking forward to receiving the information."
Dr. Avegno says her advice is much the same as her recommendations on the flu.
"Plain old soap and water is really the best," Dr. Avegno said, for frequent hand-washing. She also said people should avoid touching their face, especially around their eyes, because that's how diseases spread the easiest, whether it's influenza or coronavirus.
"Let's really think about this as a community," said Dr. Avegno. While no coronavirus cases have been diagnosed in Louisiana, we're also in the middle of a flu season that has already claimed thousands of lives in the United States.
"Let's remember, the flu had already killed about 18,000 Americans this year."
The council meets at 10:00 a.m.
