The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is encouraging you to grab a pole and take part in their annual Free Fishing Weekend this Saturday and Sunday. It’s an opportunity for all residents to fish in state waters that otherwise require a license. LDWF spokesperson Ed Pratt says it is the perfect time for experienced anglers to introduce the sport to a novice.
“Please take a young person out there with you who has probably never fished before. It’s just a great thing for them and they will love it. And if you have got some older people who want to get back out on the water and just need somebody with them get them out there too,” says Pratt.
Pratt reminds you to be safe while fishing by practicing social distancing and keep your groups to ten or less.
“But also, if you’re out on the water and you’re in a boat please wear a floatation device. Make sure if you have children on the boat with you, that they have them on too,” says Pratt.
While many families are looking for safe outdoor activities to participate in during the COVID-19 pandemic, Pratt says Free Fishing Weekend is the ideal opportunity for them to take advantage of.
“From what all the scientist are saying and you keep your distances, it’s a good way to stay away from spreading the virus,” says Pratt.
LDWF reminds the public that anytime outside Free Fishing Weekend, anglers 16 and older must possess a fishing license when fishing in any Louisiana public waters.
