What can New Orleans do to make streets safer for cyclists and pedestrians?

Today the New Orleans City Council will take up bicycle safety, after recent high-profile deaths of cyclists.

Council president Jason Williams wants the city to update its "complete streets" policy to find ways to improve bike safety.

BikeEasy executive director Dan Favre says more protected bike lanes would help.

"A protected bike lane is on or adjacent to the roadway but is physically separated from the moving motor vehicle traffic," Favre said. "Even when it is flex-post that may not stop a moving car, they do provide that visual barrier."

Some cities have even flip-flopped the position of bike lanes and parallel parking spaces relative to the curb, creating a physical barrier of parked cars to separate bikes from motorized traffic.
