Rounds of rain and potentially severe weather

Rain is headed for Southeast Louisiana, but not until after most people head to work and school.

"It is a mostly cloudy and very muggy morning across Southeast Louisiana. Temperatures are in the 70s,"  WWL-TV Meteorologist Dave Nussbaum said.

The rain is expected to move in this afternoon.

"We will have a better chance for scattered showers and thunderstorms today as a cold front stalls north of us," he explained. "The storms arrive this afternoon first on the Northshore, and then they will move south to the Southshore during the evening."

Nussbaum says that the Storm Prediction Center as a Slight Risk (Level 2/5) for the Northshore and a Marginal Risk (Level 1/5) for the Southshore for severe weather today.

"The main threats will be damaging winds and large hail, but I can't rule out a tornado or two. Heavy rain is also a concern and we could pick up 1-2" with the storms."

Another round of rain moves through early tomorrow.

"It looks like a squall line of storms will move out of Texas tonight and across SE Louisiana overnight into Friday Morning. These storms could be strong with gusty winds, hail and heavy rain. Lows will be in the 70s. Friday will start out with the line of heavy rain and storms in the morning. Then we will see new scattered storms develop during the afternoon hours. They could be strong with gusty winds and heavy rain. High temperatures will be in the lower 80s."

  • Weekend Forecast: The wet weather pattern continues all weekend as the cold front remains stalled northwest of us. Expect more scattered storms on Saturday with some heavy rain possible. High temperatures will be in the mid 80s. Then it looks like the cold front will drift into the New Orleans area on Sunday, Mother's day. This will bring us more scattered storms mainly during the afternoon and evening. Some heavy rain will be possible. It stays warm and humid with highs in the lower to mid 80s.

We could pick up 2-4"+ of rain between today and Sunday. Minor flooding issues are expected as of now, but if some areas pick up higher amounts, we could see some additional flash flooding.
