Today is Small Business Saturday. It's the day when locally owned retailers offer deals to try and woo holiday shoppers.
"A great opportunity to shop small and dine small," The National Federation of Independent Business Louisiana Director Dawn Starns says.
She urges people to eat out today and shop at businesses that are owned locally.
"Why wouldn't you want to go and support the people who are out there creating local jobs?" Starnes asked. " Small business in Louisiana employees 52.8 percent of the population."
She explains that when you help out mom and pop shops and eateries, that more of that money helps locals.
"Sixty-seven cents on the dollar stays in your community when you shop at a local business... that's awesome."
Starns says 42 percent of people surveyed indicated they’ll be supporting small businesses today, which could break a sales record set last year.
