St. Tammany President: We still have time today to get our provisions

St. Tammany Parish prepares for what Tropical Storm Sally may bring when she makes landfall on Tuesday.

St. Tammany Parish President, Mike Cooper, tells WWL First News that Sally’s juke to the east is good news for St. Tammany.

“The farther east it goes, of course, the better,” he explained. “We are expecting at this time, the four to six foot storm surge along Lake Pontchartrain which will affect the lower areas of Slidell, Lacombe, Madisonville and Mandeville.”

He says residents in St. Tammany still have time to stock up on storm supplies.

“We still have time today to get our provisions for water, food, ice, prescriptions, and any other items that we need in the event of extended power outages,” said Cooper.

He says linemen from Cleco, Washington-St. Tammany Co-Op, and Entergy are staged in the parish, ready to restore power soon as it is safe after Sally makes landfall.

Cooper also says there are plenty of sandbags still available at the six sandbag locations in the parish.

“And had a very, very high volume of people come in to get their limit of sandbags,” he said. “In the self-serve locations, we distributed almost 25,000 sandbags in that short amount of time.”
