It was a dual celebration on American Idol this past Sunday evening as the two-hour live episode featured Mother’s Day themed songs as well as covers from Coldplay, who debuted their brand new single “Higher Power.”
It was an especially emotional episode for Katy Perry, who was celebrating her first Mother’s Day as a mom. She was visibly touched by all of the Mother’s Day tribute songs and opened up about her feelings in a virtual Q&A after the show.
"To see these mysterious, strong men be sensitive and vulnerable and need their mommy, it's so sweet. It's so beautiful. I was really moved by a lot of their songs," she said.
On to the Top 5.
Perhaps the least-surprising moment of the night was when 16-year-old Casey Bishop advanced to the next round. If you recall, Luke Bryan predicted that Casey would be “the damn winner of American Idol,” earlier in the season. His praise continued as he told her he’s “never heard you hit a bad note this whole competition.”
"That was yet another glimpse into your future and what you can be," he added.
Next up to make the cut was Chayce Beckham, who delighted the judges with his cover of “Magic.”
"Half of the game is you have the confidence. The other half of the game is that you’re having fun," Lionel Richie said. "Enjoy the ride, my man."
21-year-old Willie Spence was the next to make it to the Top 5 as he gave the judges “a religious experience” with his cover of Coldplay’s “Yellow.”
16-year-old Caleb Kennedy made it into the Top 5 on the strength of the original song he wrote for his mom. "To be able to write songs like that, to truly connect like a 50-year-old wise man wrote it. It’s amazing,” Bryan told him.
The final contestant to make their way into the Top 5 was Grace Kinstler, who after wavering on the choice of her Coldplay cover settled on the song “Fix You.”
Her choice paid off as Katy Perry told her “it was breaking through the facade of show business. It was really connected. I think you finally arrived with that song."
