Things have not gone well for the Chicago Cubs of late, but on Sunday that caught a fortuitous break.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, with the game tied at 2, the Arizona Diamondbacks had the bases loaded and one out with Kole Calhoun up at the plate when Cubs reliever Adam Morgan got him to ground a ball to first baseman Anthony Rizzo.
Rizzo fielded the ball about 10 feet behind the bag and fired the ball down the first base line toward home plate for the force out.
In doing so, Calhoun ducked to avoid being hit by Rizzo’s throw. However, it appeared as if Calhoun also stopped running when he ducked, allowing Robinson Chirinos to fire the ball back to first base, where Morgan was covering, to complete the unusual 3-2-1 double play and keep the game tied at 2.
It was one of the more unusual things you will see happen on a baseball field, but it may not be the most bizarre thing that even happened on Sunday, as the Mets had something even crazier happen in their game.
Nonetheless, the Cubs will surely take whatever breaks they can get.
