A man accused of carjacking and murdering a father picking his child up from a Mid City daycare Tuesday afternoon is himself clinging to life, after being found in the vehicle in Metairie with a gunshot wound to his head.

Police say 21-year-old Raymond Wells committed the carjacking and murder in the 3400 block of Canal Street around 5 p.m. Using license plate readers, they were able to track the vehicle to I-10 near the Bonnabel Exit, where Wells was found inside with the gunshot wound.

"Should Mr. Wells recover from his wounds, he'll be booked with first degree murder," said New Orleans Police Deputy Superintendent Nick Gernon. "But at this point, he is in extremely grave condition.

The Jefferson parish sheriff's office is investigating that shooting.
