More back-and-forth between the New Orleans City Council and the Mayor of New Orleans is expected today when the council holds its regular meeting.
While a judge has put the council's travel spending ban on hold, another item on today's agenda would prohibit the city from reimbursing anyone traveling on official city business for alcoholic beverages. Council president J.P. Morrell says it's ridiculous it has even come to this.
"It really demonstrates a significant disconnect between what the people of this city are going through," Morrell said.
Meanwhile, a hearing is set for Friday on whether the restraining order on the council's ban will continue while the mayor's suit against the council proceeds.
Morrell insists the council controls the power of the purse.
"We have the ability to say how money can be spent or when money should not be spent," he said.
All this started when the mayor said the city could not afford to settle a lawsuit filed against it by the school board... which claims the city is improperly withholding part of the school's tax revenue.
