The National Hurricane Center is watching the Gulf Coast for tropical development this week.
"Environmental conditions appear favorable enough to support some gradual development of this system," federal forecasters advised.
They have highlighted an area from Florida through much of Louisiana for possible impact.
"We could have Tropical Storm Dexter in the Gulf later this week," according to WWL TV Meteorologist Payton Malone. "We'll watch for possible slow tropical development before the system moves inland on Friday."
He says he does not expect to see a hurricane from this system.
"Regardless of development this will be a rain maker along the northern Gulf toward the middle and end of this week."
The Hurricane Center currently only gives it a 30% chance of getting a name, but Malone says that may change.
Like Malone, the NHC does advise preparing for possible flooding either way.
"Regardless of development, heavy rainfall could produce localized flash flooding."
